Modifications to Drive a Speedometer Cable
(page 6-3 of the Chevrolet TPI & TBI Engine Swapping Manual)
The T56 transmission has no provisions for a speedometer cable. Stealth Conversions sells a speedometer sleeve housing and instructions to modify the T56 tailhousing (Part #T56-005) for a conventional gear-driven speedometer cable. Part #T56-005 consists of items #1, #2, #4, #5 shown on the next page, plus epoxy, a pair of syringes to pour the epoxy, putty (for molding the epoxy), and instructions. More information is on the next page. Stealth Conversions also sells tailhousings that have been modified to drive a speedometer cable.

T56 Speedometer Cable Modification
(pages 6-4 through 6-6 of the Chevrolet TPI & TBI Engine Swapping Manual)
To make the T56 drive a speedometer cable, the tailhousing requires the following parts:
The speedo-cable tailhousing modification consists of boring a 1-1/16" hole 1.255" below the original VSS hole to install a specially machined speedometer sleeve (item #5). The sleeve is bolted to the housing. The original hole for the vehicle speed sensor is plugged (item #4), and then the assembly is sealed with epoxy. The speedometer driven gear (item #8) is from a Camaro T5 transmission, which installs onto the transmission output shaft with no modifications.
The machining on the tailhousing requires a vertical mill, a 1-1/16" diameter 2-flute endmill, 13/64"drill bit and a 6mm x 1.0mm tap. In addition, a 24 mm drill or endmill is recommended to machine the original VSS hole so that the plug (item #4) can be easily installed.
Due to variations in the castings of the tailhousing, the sleeve housing (item #5) requires additional machining to counterbore a hole which requires a 5/8" 2-flute endmill, and a 9/32" drill bit.
Below, the first photo shows the sleeve housing (item #5) installed into the tailhousing.
The second photo shows the housing assembly after the epoxy (JB Weld brand) has been poured around the sleeve housing. The most time consuming part of the tailhousing modification has to do with the epoxy, as there are several steps required to pour it, and the tailhousing has to have epoxy poured on both sides.
